n Pottsville: The Gabriel Youth Orchestra's holiday concert is set for 3 p.m. Sunday in the auditorium of the Pottsville Area School District's D.H.H. Lengel Middle School, 1541 W. Laurel Blvd., with John F. Potlunas as music director. Admission is $5 per person. Established under the auspices of the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble, the youth orchestra, according to a Gabriel press release, "provides an opportunity for high school students from throughout the region to play in a professionally managed and conducted setting." It is open to young musicians in grades seven through 12. Exceptions are made for younger students upon recommendation of their music teachers. The youth orchestra is in its fourth season under the direction of Potlunas, retired Tamaqua Area High School band director. Potlunas was also director of the Schuylkill Youth Symphony Orchestra for 18 years. The Gabriel Youth Orchestra, according to the release, is the "only available outlet for young musicians to assemble in full orchestral mode, with the string instruments differentiating the ensemble from the many 'bands' that exist at the high school level and in the community." The youth orchestra is funded by the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble organization, by ticket and advertising revenue as well as individual, corporate and foundation support, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, M&T Bank and grants, Agnes Maurer, Gabriel executive director, said in the release.
n Pottsville: The Sovereign Majestic Theater, in conjunction with the Pottsville Gymnastics & Theatrical Center Inc., will present "A Broadway Christmas" at 6 p.m. Saturday. The show will feature 40 local performers singing Christmas songs from various Broadway shows as well as traditional holiday songs, according to a release. Tickets are $15 each and area available by calling the theater at 570-628-4647. Tickets will also be available at the theater the evening of the show.
n Schuylkill Haven: Breakfast with Santa is set for 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Liberty Fire Company No. 4, Columbia and St. James streets. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12. n Shenandoah: The Shenandoah Rotary Club has distributed ham dinners for people at the Shenandoah High Rise, Main and Oak streets, and at Shenandoah Village Apartments, East Coal Street. The Rotarians also are selling old-fashioned booms at $14 each and will distribute holiday blankets to the residents of Ridgeview Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., according to a report made at the November meeting of the Greater Shenandoah Area Chamber of Commerce.
n Tamaqua: The Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship is offering luminaria for use during the Advent and Christmas season at homes, businesses and churches. Kits containing five luminaria are available from TAFFN members, local church offices and the Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce office at 114 W. Broad St., according to a TAFFN press release.
