Ashland Rotary
Sarah Barket, a senior at North Schuylkill High School, was chosen as student of the month for December by Ashland Area Rotary Club.
Sarah's high school activities include National Honor Society, student council, class officer, chorus, theater arts, track and field, peer mediation and yearbook. Her community activities include volunteering with Schuylkill Women in Crisis, helping with CCD and activities held by community organizations.
She is a daughter of Mark and Ann Marie Barket, Ashland, and plans to attend Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster.
Shen Rotary
Evan Rooney, a senior at Shenandoah Valley High School, was named student of the month for December by the Shenandoah Rotary Club.
Evan is a member of the Nativity BVM High School's soccer team and SV's baseball team. He is drama club president, a class ambassador, a member of the National Honor Society and homecoming float committee and a contributor to SV pep rallies.
His community service includes volunteering at the annual Shenandoah Kielbasi Fest, Vera Bradley Bingo and Quarter Jam. He has volunteered time working on the shape of the Little League field in Shenandoah and working on the Lost Creek soccer field and William Penn softball field. His other volunteer activities include Shenandoah Oktoberfest, American Red Cross blood drive donor, canvassing the school for Toys for Tots donations, the SV annual Powder Puff football game to benefit the Colin Rooney Memorial Scholarship, Halloween window painting and other service projects. He also serves as an official FIFA (soccer) referee.
Evan won Sovereign Majestic Awards for his performances in school musicals, including Best Comedic Actor in 2011 for his role in "Chicago," and Best Supporting Actor in 2013 for his role in "Spamalot."
A son of Jack and Lisa Rooney, Shenandoah, Evan plans to attend college to attain a business degree.
Mahanoy Middle
Nathan Macleary and Payton Bernardyn were chosen students of the month for November by Mahanoy Area Middle School faculty through a program sponsored by the Mahanoy Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 695. The nominees are judged on the basis of multiple achievements, character, leadership, citizenship and scholastic aptitude.
Nathan, a son of Sean and Nanette Macleary, Mahanoy City, is a member of Blessed Theresa of Calcutta Roman Catholic Church, Mahanoy City, where he is a greeter. A distinguished honor student, Nathan is involved in the chorus, National Junior Honor Society, Community Outreach Group, Theatre Arts, ski club, middle school float committee, spelling bee, seventh- and eighth-grade football, track and field, and seventh- and eighth-grade wrestling. He volunteers his time helping coach Mahanoy City Midget Football.
Nathan plans to attend college in the future.
Payton, a daughter of Mark and Stephanie Bernardyn, Gilberton, is a member of Blessed Theresa of Calcutta Roman Catholic Church, Mahanoy City, where she is a greeter. She is eighth-grade class president and a member of the chorus, National Junior Honor Society, Community Outreach Group, student council, Theatre Arts, seventh- and eighth-grade cheerleading, cross country, swim team and track and field.
A distinguished honor student, she achieved perfect attendance in seventh grade. She volunteers her time with church functions and placed and removed flags from grave markers for Labor Day.
Payton plans to attend college and study to become a veterinarian.
