PATTERSONVILLE - Quick action by a Union Township homeowner and a quick response by firefighters kept damage from a Sunday afternoon fire to a minimum.

Ringtown Fire and Rescue Chief Ray Dunsavage said firefighters were called to the home at 113 Wolf Road about 2:30 p.m. for a reported structure fire.

The home, occupied by Albert Idacavage, his wife and three children, sustained minimal damage because the man used a dry chemical fire extinguisher to help contain the fire and quickly called for the fire department, authorities said.

Dunsavage said the fire originated in a recessed kitchen light and spread slightly into the walls and reached the attic. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental, electrical in nature, Dunsavage said.

Dunsavage said Albert Idacavage and his family were inside the home, smelled smoke and then saw smoke coming from the light above the sink.

After getting his family out, Idacavage used the extinguisher that helped slow the fire down until volunteers arrived, Dunsavage said.

Ringtown Valley and Rescue firefighters managed to keep the fire to the area where it originated, with minimal damage to the rest of the home, Dunsavage added.

"The guys did a really good job," he said. "We let them (the family) back inside since there was very little damage."

Dunsavage said that firefighters from Ringtown Valley and Rescue responded along with firefighters from Shenandoah, Sheppton-Oneida and Aristes and a Rapid Intervention Team from Mahanoy City.

Lost Creek EMS was on scene but no injuries were reported, the chief said.
