SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - The Walk In Art Center was filled with red Sunday as it played host to The Little Red Dress Event.
Previously held at the Pottsville Club, the third annual fundraiser is sponsored by the Schuylkill Health Auxiliary to promote cardiac health for women and is held in conjunction with American Heart Month. The event was co-chaired by auxiliary members Paula Ney and Pamela Purcell.
"It is to educate women about having a healthy heart and empowering them to take care of themselves," Ney said.
Nationally, about 600,000 people die of heart disease, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women.
There were about 35 vendors selling food, art and jewelry at the fundraiser and nearly 200 people attended.
"Every year we've grown," Purcell said. "People really seem to enjoy it."
Tickets were sold for $20, with all proceeds going to the Schuylkill Health Auxiliary.
"It's February and I think everyone has cabin fever and they like to support the hospital," Purcell said.
The event also featured a fashion show hosted by The Doris Berry Shop, Hamburg, and two guest speakers.
"We try to do something different every year," Purcell said.
This year, Dr. Jospeh Chipriano talked about the effects dental care can have on someone's overall health. Debbie Cody, of Studio 16 Salon, talked about the latest hair and beauty trends.
"I thought it was a great event," Cody said. "Everyone really enjoyed it. Women are interested in keeping themselves healthy."
Dolores Zemantauski and Rosalind Rux, both of Port Carbon, said they attended the event Sunday to support the hospital.
"It's a very good event for the hospital and we are happy to support it," Rux said.
