HEGINS - Although the Tri-Valley Girls' Softball Association will begin its season April 28, the girls who play tee ball and pony-level softball will have a new field to use in 2015.
Maurer Excavating brought its heavy equipment to Hegins Park a few weeks ago to begin the construction of the field. Mark Maurer is the project manager for the new field installation. Troy Snyder is the director of field maintenance for the TVGSA.
The field installation, design and plan was approved by the Hegins Park Association Board of Directors last summer, according to Dave Masser, president of the TVGSA. The sedimentation and erosion control plan was approved by the county last fall.
"We expect the field to be established by June to facilitate parking for the Hegins Firemen's Carnival," Masser said. "The field should improve the drainage situation for the low lying area that existed and allow additional cars to be parked on the area in wet conditions."
The TVGSA was established in 1987. The purpose of the organization is "to give every girl in the Tri-Valley area a chance to play organized softball, promote education, sportsmanship and leadership."
"The TVGSA has over 120 girls playing softball this year. The demand for field use was growing beyond the current facilities," Masser said. "A third field will help with scheduling games, practices and teaching younger players the game with the use of smaller field dimensions. Tee ball and pony-level players will get a true sense of positions on the field. On a regular size field, tee ball and pony-level outfield players play so close to the infield dirt they don't get a true sense of the position and how the ball reacts on turf."
