GIRARDVILLE - The borough council accepted the resignation of Vice President Joseph Catizone at Thursday's meeting.

The resignation is effective May 30, allowing time to find a borough resident to fill the vacancy at the June 12 meeting.

Council President Charles Marquardt read the resignation letter.

"For the past several months, my health has been in decline. I must take time for medical and personal issues to be resolved, thus I am unable at this time to fulfill my duties as a council member," Catizone said in his letter.

"It is with regret that we have to accept this," Marquardt said.

After the vote to accept the resignation, Marquardt asked for Councilman Joseph Kessler to be appointed as vice president, effective May 30. The motion was approved.

"We will be accepting resumes from anybody in the borough to fill the vacancy on Joe's term, which will run out at the end of next year," Marquardt said.

Marquardt said May 30 is the deadline to inform the borough of an interest to be appointed to the council.

In other business, the borough council reduced the monthly curbside recycling collections to one day.

"We have come to the conclusion that with a workforce of two people, we are going to make the last Friday of every month to collect recycling and ash pickup," Marquardt said.

The new curbside recycling schedule will begin this month on May 30, changing from the former two-day collection on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of the month.

For the summer months, ash pickup is on the same day once a month. It will return to pickup every Friday in the fall.

The borough council approved advertising for three per diem streets employees on an as-needed basis at $8.50 per hour.

"We need to set up interviews," Marquardt said. "If anyone is interested, they should submit their application within two weeks, with the cutoff date of May 23. The applicants need to have a Pennsylvania driver's license."

In the streets report, pothole patching on Second Street will be conducted in the near future.

In other action, the borough council:

- Accepted the completed 2013 annual accountants' review. Marquardt said, "Everything checked out."

- Approved the borough's participation in the county's annual fall cleanup. A date was not announced.

- Approved changes in the employee manual regarding time off, days off and code of conduct.

- Approved a request from the Girard Hose Company to hold a tag day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 24. Fire company members will be at Second and Main streets, Second Street and Mahanoy Avenue and Main and Julia streets.

- Approved a request from American Legion Post 309 to hold the annual Memorial Day remembrance on May 26. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. at end at the Veterans Memorial at Third and Ogden streets, where the program will be held.

- Approved a request from resident Rosalie Kuzma to allow her to continue to plant flowers at the park at Main and Second streets. Kuzma has done the volunteer work for the past two years.
