SHENANDOAH - A preliminary hearing for a Mahanoy City woman charged with stabbing her mother's boyfriend to death was continued Thursday.

Kimberly Lynn Hons, 33, of 739 E. Mahanoy Ave., was scheduled to appear before Magisterial District Judge Anthony J. Kilker on charges of voluntary manslaughter and aggravated assault, both felony offenses, as well as misdemeanor charges of possessing instruments of crime and recklessly endangering another person.

The hearing, however, was continued until 11 a.m. May 22 at the request of Hons' attorney who could not attend Thursday due to a family emergency.

Mahanoy City police Patrolman Jonathan McHugh charged Hons with fatally stabbing Lawrence Quinn, 52, about 4:25 a.m. Dec. 1 in the home Quinn, his girlfriend, Linda Smith, and Hons lived.

Quinn died from a single stab wound to the chest that caused a perforated lung and severed pulmonary artery. Forensic pathologist Dr. Samuel Land classified the death a homicide.

McHugh said he arrived at the home shortly after being told about a possible stabbing and was met on the front porch by Hons who made an "excited utterance" claiming, "I stabbed him, and I think I killed him," referring to Quinn.

When interviewed after the incident, McHugh said Smith told him that she and Hons went to several bars the night before - Nov. 30 - and when she returned home, Quinn was sitting in the kitchen drinking beer and the two began to argue.

Smith said she and Quinn pushed each other, resulting in items being broken in the home and a telephone ripped from a wall, after which she slapped him in the face and Quinn then slapped her in the face with an open hand, causing her nose to bleed.

Smith said that about 30 minutes later, Hons arrived and confronted Quinn after seeing dried blood under her nose and being told that Quinn struck her, according to McHugh.

Smith said Hons pushed Quinn and then he pushed her back and grabbed her on the neck and shoulder area and pulled her hair, McHugh said in his affidavit of probable cause.

At that point, Smith reported that Hons grabbed a kitchen knife from a counter and Quinn told her "go ahead and stab me" as they again approached each other.

McHugh said Smith reported Hons lunged at Quinn, stabbed him one time in the chest and then pulled the knife out. Quinn then fell to the floor, bleeding and gasping for breath, Smith said.

McHugh said Hons then left the home and went to a neighbor's house, pounded on the door and asked him to call 911.

Smith said that she began doing CPR on Quinn and Hons returned, took off her T-shirt and began putting pressure on the wound.

McHugh said about 8:45 am. Dec. 1, Hons was interviewed and admitted to being out drinking, coming home and confronting Quinn after seeing her mother injured.

Hons also admitted getting a knife from a counter and stabbing Quinn one time after he made the statement telling her to do so, McHugh said.

The officer also said that after the incident, Hons had no visible signs of injuries to her neck and shoulder areas resulting from the altercation.

McHugh also said that on Dec. 2, Hons was interviewed by a local television station and, while on camera, provided details of the incident and admitted stabbing Quinn.
