SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - A Schuylkill Haven woman was jailed last week after being charged for her role in a crash that claimed the life of a man last year.
State police Trooper Thomas Laselva of the Schuylkill Haven station charged Amie L. Wiscount, 32, with causing the death of her passenger, Daniel E. Wenrich, 40, of Pine Grove, in a crash July 26 on Route 443, Long Run Road, in Wayne Township.
On May 7, Laselva said Wiscount was arraigned on charges of involuntary manslaughter, recklessly endangering another person, homicide by vehicle while DUI, DUI, careless driving and driving on roadways laned for traffic.
She was then committed to Schuylkill County Prison, unable to post 10 percent of $25,000 bail set by Magisterial District Judge James R. Ferrier, Orwigsburg.
Laselva said the crash occurred about 9:45 p.m., when Wiscount was driving a 2003 Jeep Liberty Sport west and swerved to miss a deer that entered the road from the northern shoulder of the highway.
After swerving, Wiscount lost control of the vehicle and drove off the road onto the north berm, where the SUV hit a tree with its right front end, Laselva said.
After hitting the tree, the trooper said the Jeep spun clockwise and struck a utility pole with its driver's side quarter panel, continued to spin clockwise and then came to a stop on the north side of the road facing south.
Wenrich was extricated from the SUV by firefighters who were called to the scene but was pronounced dead there by a Schuylkill County deputy coroner.
Wiscount was not injured, Laselva said, adding that Wiscount was wearing her lap and shoulder belt, but it was not known of Wenrich was restrained at the time of the crash.
Wiscount will now have to appear for a preliminary hearing before Ferrier in his Orwigsburg courtroom.
