Democrats and Republicans in Schuylkill County will hit the polls Tuesday for the 2014 primary election.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the 125 precincts throughout the county.
The county Election Bureau had a total of 84,400 registered voters. That number includes 35,481 Democrats and 39,653 Republicans available to vote on who will represent their respective parties in the General Election on Nov. 4.
Schuylkill County Coroner Dr. David J. Moylan, who is also medical director of the Simon Kramer Institute of Therapeutic Oncology, New Philadelphia, is seeking the Republican nod for U.S. Congress in the 17th District. Also seeking the GOP nomination are Matt Connolly and Matthew Dietz, both of Northampton County.
The winner of the primary race will take on incumbent U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, a Moosic Democrat who won the seat in 2012 after redistricting moved most of the 17th District farther north and east. The district now includes all of Schuylkill County and portions of Carbon, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe and Northampton counties.
Democratic voters will be choosing a candidate to take on Gov. Tom Corbett and Lt. Gov. Jim Cawley. Tom Wolf, Robert M. McCord, Katie McGinty, and Allyson Y. Schwartz are all seeking the Democratic nomination in the gubernatorial race while Mike Stack, Mark Critz, Mark Smith, Brandon P. Neuman, and Brad Koplinski all seek the party's nomination for lieutenant governor.
Voters will also be choosing the members of their respective state party committees.
Democratic candidates are Liz Bettinger and Laine S. Gehres. Republican candidates are Scott R. Thomas, Carolyn L. Bonkoski, George Moyer, Ron Boltz Male, Kyle Heffner Male, and Mary Beth Dougherty.
County party committee members will also be chosen Tuesday to represent voting precincts in about a dozen municipalities.
As of Sunday night, the National Weather Service forecasts a high temperature of 72 degrees Tuesday with a zero percent chance of rain.
