"I, Jack, take you, Victor, to be my wedded spouse," Jack R. Fix said Tuesday morning at Pottsville's City Hall.

Fix, 72, and Victor F. Santiago, 60, both of Pottsville, were the first same-sex couple to be married in Schuylkill County after having been the first to apply for a license last week.

Although they've been a couple for years, Fix expressed some jitters before the ceremony.

"I'm nervous, even after 34 years. I'm more nervous than when we applied for the license," he said.

The ceremony in the council chambers in city hall, conducted by Mayor James T. Muldowney, lasted about two minutes. At its conclusion, Muldowney pronounced the couple "husband and husband."

The ceremony was witnessed by Johnathan Kressly, 24, of Pottsville.

Each man will keep his own last name.

It was the second marriage ceremony Muldowney has performed.

He also said this ceremony was different mainly in its wording, such as "husband and husband" and "wedded spouse."

Muldowney said he does not have the authority to reject marriages.

Magisterial District Judge James R. Ferrier, Orwigsburg, said he has received no instructions from the state about he and other magisterial district judges officiating at same-sex weddings.

Fix and Santiago said they have received many comments since they have been in the news.

Fix said many people have stopped them in public to comment on their marriage license application.

"It's scary, but they are all nice," Santiago said.

Santiago said he eventually hopes to go on their honeymoon to Salem, Massachusetts.

He also said that maybe their marriage will help other same-sex couples feel more comfortable about marrying.
