SAINT CLAIR - The borough council approved Tuesday the purchase of a new set of radios for the Saint Clair police.
There will be six portable and three mobile radios purchased for the new, digital radio system tested by the borough police. The radios have a two-year warranty on them, and two more may be purchased in two years if necessary as backup radios. This will save the borough money in the budget as the price of the radios may drop in that two-year period, and there will be enough in the budget for extra radios in a year.
The new and improved system will allow the fire department, EMS and law enforcement to communicate effectively during emergencies, which was not able to be done on the old system. The system works in many more areas of the county, including schools and Wal-Mart in Saint Clair.
The mobile devices also allow officers to chase criminals more safely when the officer is on his or her own. There is a GPS on the mobile radios to send an officer's coordinates out in an emergency as well as open the microphone for 30 seconds. The message will be heard on a channel that is always monitored.
