Big Brother is watching.
That phase belongs to George Orwell's classic novel "Nineteen Eighty-Four."
First published in 1949, the science-fiction novel about a dystopian society under strict government surveillance has seen an increase in sales on Amazon following the National Security Agency scandal.
Several editions of the book have been featured on Amazon's "Movers and Shakers" list, which tracks products with high sales gains over the previous 24 hours.
On Friday, the 60th-Anniversary Edition was the 48th best seller on the website after being in the top 100 for four days. Three different editions of the book were in the top 10 earlier this week. Last week, the book was ranked at 12,189.
While the book has been flying off the shelves at Amazon, Schuylkill County residents in the Pottsville area have not been checking out copies from their local libraries
The Pottsville Free Public Library has three copies of "Nineteen Eighty-Four" and an audio book, none of which were recently checked out as of Friday.
However, Darren DeArment, head of Youth Services at the library, was glad to see a revival of interest in the book.
"I'm pleasantly surprised people are still aware of it. It's a good cautionary tale," DeArment said Friday.
DeArment said he has read the book several times since first opening it in seventh grade. He encouraged young readers to pick up a copy of the book.
"I think people should be aware what technology is out there, how it's being used and how this affects individual privacy - something which I care about as a librarian as well."
A similar novel by Aldous Huxley titled "Brave New World" has also recently increased in sales and had a sales rank of 277 on Friday.
