n Ashland: A mum sale is being held to benefit the Ashland Public Library. The sale features mums in a nine-inch pot at $10 each or two for $16. Large tri-color pot mums are $20. There also is a limited number of hanging baskets for $10 each. Flower can be picked up at Lynch's Landscaping along the Ashland-Gordon road. Pickup dates begin Sept. 10 and go through Oct. 6 as follows: 6 a.m. to dusk on Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets and more information are available at the library by calling 570-875-3175.

n Kelayres: The Kline Township supervisors released a statement notifying residents that garbage payments are now considered delinquent. The fee is now $195 and is due immediately. Checks can be mailed to Kline Township Supervisors, 30 Fifth St., Box 338, Kelayres, PA 18231. Letters have been mailed and unpaid residents will no longer be able to put their garbage out for collection. If delinquents put out garbage after Aug. 30, a littering fine will be imposed.

n McAdoo: Winners of a recent hoop shoot contest held in the borough were: Ages 6 to 8, first place, Paige Welsh; second place, Joey Walko; third place, Dylan Zullo; ages 9 to 12, first place, Noah Mumaw; second place, Christopher Ritsick; third place, Nick Waak. Nineteen youngsters participated. Organizers thanked Mayor Dane Watro and Brian Welsh, who conducted the contest, and Aristide Torre of Via Nuove Pizza, who donated coupons for pizza to all the contestants.

n Pottsville: In anticipation of a seasonal surge in passport applications, the prothonotary's office will offer extended hours at the Schuylkill County Courthouse from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 12. To ensure that no one is turned away, Prothonotary David J. Dutcavich said in a release, applicants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the application process and required documents and to download a passport application by visiting www.travel.state.gov. In addition to having required documents (and/or parents, for children under 16), applicants should have two checks for each application. Passport application fees are $110 for adults and $80 for children under 16. County fees are $25 per applicant process and $10 per applicant photo, if required. The extended hours, according to the release, "are for the sole purpose of assisting day-shift workers and students in processing passport applications. Legal documents delivered during these hours will be held until regular working hours for filing." Schools or groups of 10 or more applicants should call to ensure that the office is adequately staffed. For larger groups, other dates can be made available by appointment. n Pottsville: Schuylkill County Sheriff Joseph G. Groody announced his office at the county courthouse will have extended hours and days regarding licenses to carry firearms as follows: 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 12. During those hours, Groody said in a release, "we will be accepting applications for license to carry firearms for renewal or new applicants." The office's normal hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. "To better serve county residents, I will continue to offer office hours on announced Thursdays and Saturdays to accommodate law-abiding citizens an opportunity to apply" for licenses, Groody said in the release. The fee for the license is $20 payable by check or money order, not cash, on the special extended-hours days. Checks must be made out to Schuylkill County Treasurer. Cash is accepted only during the normal office hours. Applications can be found online at: www.co.schuylkill.pa.us/Offices/Sheriff/index.asp. Current license holders can only renew up to 60 days before their expiration date. Applicants must be 21 or older and will need a primary identification such as a valid Pennsylvania driver's license or current Pennsylvania Identification Card bearing the applicant's current address. Applicants must also have two references (not family members) - with full names, full addresses and phone numbers. Applications will be processed and permits will be mailed to the applicant's home address.
