ASHLAND - Fifteen people were displaced from their homes following a fire about 3 a.m. Monday in an apartment building at 714 W. Centre St.
In a telephone interview Monday, Ashland fire Chief Phil Groody said that the fire was under control about 15 minutes after the time of dispatch.
"The fire was contained to the rear of the building in a ground-floor apartment," Groody said.
Groody said that the fire is being investigated by himself and state police fire marshal Trooper John F. Burns.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown and the investigation is ongoing. There were no injuries reported.
According to a press release from Jennifer LoConte, regional communications officer for the American Red Cross, the American Red Cross Greater Schuylkill Chapter responded to the apartment building fire and provided services for six families.
The first family, two adults and two children, was provided food; the second family, one adult and two children, was provided food and lodging; the third family, one adult, was provided food and lodging; the fourth family, one adult, was provided food and lodging; the fifth family, two adults, was provided food and lodging; and the sixth family, two adults and two children, was provided food and lodging.
"The Red Cross will follow up with the families if additional services are needed," LoConte said.
Groody said that since power had to be disconnected from the building, the families haven't been able to return to their homes yet, but they will be able to once power is restored.
