Nativity BVM High School is looking for a host family for a student that will be coming to Schuylkill County for the remainder of the academic year in January.

"We have a kid that we've accepted that is coming from Vietnam, and we don't have a host family for him," said Maureen Challenger, a science and math teacher at Nativity, as well as a coordinator for Educatius.

Educatius provides educational programs for students abroad.

Challenger said that this year Nativity has 21 international students from a variety of different countries and the school works with many different agencies.

The student that needs a host family is Hung "Marx" Chan Tran, 16, of Ho Chi Mihn, Vietnam.

"This particular student would just be here until the end of the school year, but if anybody is interested, we also have quite a few students that are looking to come here for next year," Challenger said.

She said that he is a top student and is "high achieving."

Challenger said many people expressed interest in being a host family, but were unable to host Tran due to his arrival date coinciding with the holiday season.

A host family would need to provide a bedroom and food for breakfast and dinner.

The students can then either pack or purchase a lunch.

Host families also receive a stipend, but Challenger said interested families can inquire for more information.

The students also have their tuition already paid and get bus transportation from wherever the host family lives in the county.

"It's more to experience family life in America," Challenger said. "The families aren't required to do anything extraordinary, but the same activities you would do with your families on a regular basis. They're very happy to do those things."

She also said that the cultural part is very interesting for both the student and the host family.

There is one other student, a girl from Mexico, who is living with a coordinator from Mexico and could use a host family, since he isn't getting the whole American family experience.

"It's a lot of fun, too," Challenger said. "We have two in our house, one from Hong Kong and one from Turkey."

Anyone interested is asked to contact Challenger at Nativity at 570-622-8110.

They would like to make arrangements for Tran before the holidays next month.
