The 17 girls vying for title of Queen of the Snows showed off their best characteristics to the crowd Friday for Senior Princess Yuengling Night at the Humane Fire Company, Pottsville.
During the event, part of the 47th annual Greater Pottsville Winter Carnival, judges scored the girls on poise, personality, appearance and clarity during the question-and-answer session.
The girls, dressed in a variety of outfits that showed their personalities, came out and took their seats about 9:10 p.m., and the Master of Ceremonies T.J. Fitzpatrick introduced the 10 judges for the night.
During the question-and-answer session at Yuengling Night, those seeking to be queen were given "would you rather" scenarios and asked for their responses.
Questions ranged from serious to silly. One contestant, Angela Avolio, sponsored by Smoker's Heaven, was asked if she would rather be a giant hamster or a tiny rhino.
"Oh, I know, I want to be a tiny rhino. A giant hamster just sounds bad," Avolio said. "A giant hamster would be pretty smelly probably."
Kelly Ann Bensinger, sponsored by Pottsville Area Development Corp., was asked if she would rather end world hunger or achieve world peace.
"I would choose to end world hunger simply because if you are hungry for too long, you couldn't be peaceful anyway," Bensinger said.
The women were also asked questions about their hobbies and goals.
Bensinger said that she wants to open a child care center on the Geisinger Health campus in Danville, not only for employees, but also for patients to drop off their children.
The cost of admittance to Friday night's event was $10, which included selections of Yuengling beer.
2013 Queen of the Snows Corene Parrish and 2013 Snowflake Princess Devan Direnzo also made an appearance and recalled how much they enjoyed competing last year.
The Winter Carnival continues with the Snowdrop and Snowflake Pageant at 7 p.m. today at the Robert W. Wachter Auditorium at Pottsville Area High School.
Doors will open to the public at 6:15 p.m. and tickets are $6.
The Winter Carnival will conclude Feb. 8 with the crowning of the Queen of Snows, also at Pottsville Area High School.
