10 people not hurt

in 4-vehicle crash

CRESSONA - Ten people escaped serious injuries in a four-vehicle crash on the Gordon Nagle Trail, just east of Glenworth Road in North Manheim Township, about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, police said.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said David N. Murphy Jr., 25, of Orwigsburg, was driving a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 west when he ran into the back of a 2013 Toyota Highlander being driven west by Kelly Drouncheck, 32, of Pottsville, causing it to hit the back of a 2005 Kia Sedona driven by Thomas Bowitz Sr., 73, of Pottsville.

The impact pushed the Bowitz car into the eastbound lane where it was struck by an oncoming 2007 Pontiac GS driven by Paul M. Konkus Jr., 36, of Pottsville, police said.

Bowitz and his passenger, a 16-year-old boy, suffered minor injuries and were taken to Schuylkill Medical Center-East Norwegian Street for treatment, police said, and noted that Konkus was not hurt but his passenger, Ernest J. Hummel Jr., 45, of Minersville, suffered minor injuries.

Murphy and his passengers, Christopher E. Murphy, 24, of Orwigsburg, and a 15-year-old Pottsville girl, along with Drouncheck and her passengers, Matthew Drouncheck, 31, and a 3-year-old girl, both of Pottsville, all escaped injury, police said.

Police said David Murphy will be cited for driving at an unsafe speed as a result of the crash.

Woman swerves

to avoid debris

HEGINS - An Annville woman escaped injury when the 2001 Volkswagen Passat she was driving crashed in the southbound lanes of Interstate 81 at mile marker 111.3 in Frailey Township about 6 p.m. Sunday, police said.

State police at Frackville said Stacy Andrews, 36, was driving south in the passing lane when she made an abrupt right turn to avoid a piece of flying debris. Police said she lost control of the car and went off the road where her car hit several small trees before coming to a stop.

The vehicle was towed from the scene, and police said no citations will be issued as a result of the crash.

Trespass incident

probed by police

LAVELLE - State police at Schuylkill Haven are investigating a criminal trespass incident that occurred at 1227 Deep Creek Road in Barry Township between midnight and 5:45 a.m. March 16.

Police said a group of people arrived at the home while the resident was out, but two of her friends were in the house.

Police said the group tried to get into the woman's car that was parked in the driveway. Police said the group left but returned several times before fleeing on foot through an empty field.

Nothing was stolen, but police said a witness reported seeing the glow from one of the person's cellphones in the middle of the empty field.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 570-739-1330.

Traffic stop

nets charges

McADOO - A Hazle Township man was charged by McAdoo police with underage drinking after officers stopped a vehicle he was driving for an equipment violation on North Kennedy Drive about 2:50 a.m. March 20.

When officers approached the driver, who police did not identify, they detected a strong odor of alcohol and asked the driver if he had been drinking. The man, police said, admitted drinking but said he stopped hours before, at 10 p.m., and thought he would be safe to drive.

In speaking with a passenger, Angel Rivera, 843 Winters Ave., he was found to have slurred speech, glossy eyes and an odor of alcohol on him.

Although Rivera initially denied drinking, he eventually admitted to consuming alcohol and was subsequently charged with underage drinking, police said.
