n Millersburg: The Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art will celebrate the grand opening of the DeSoto Amphitheater for the Performing Arts at 6 p.m. July 25 at the center. Admission is free. A performance by Harrisburg-based folk outfit Rough Edges String Band will kick off the evening's festivities, according to a release from Alexis Dow Campbell, the center's director of creative programming. There will also be performances by Ned Smith Center Cultural Partners Pennsylvania Regional Ballet, the Twin Valley Players and the Gamut Theatre Group. Donors to the project will be recognized and all attendees will be able to enjoy a cupcake. "The Amphitheater will be a major pillar in the center's mission to bridge nature and the arts," Marilyn Kauffman, co-chairwoman of the amphitheater committee, said in the release. "Its planned programing of arts, education, community and family events will join the galleries and nature trails in furthering Ned Smith's legacy." The amphitheater is named for committee co-chairwoman Carole DeSoto, who said it will be a "perfect gathering place for educational programming." The cost is $20 per flag and the banners will be displayed in the borough throughout the year for holidays. The Rotarians hope the project will eliminate weathering of the community's patriotic display flags.
