MCKEANSBURG - The Strawberry Festival tradition has returned to Christ Church in McKeansburg.
It hasn't been held for at least 20 years but is now back to provide a way for those in the community to get together, church members said.
"We always look to the traditions of the church to see what we should keep and let go and resurrect from past years," the Rev. Sunny Stock said.
She did not know the exact reason why it discontinued, but is glad to see it return. Stock has been the pastor for seven years.
Between 150 to 200 people attended, said Jane Shellhamer, an organizer.
The event also attracted those who are not members of the church, she said.
"We decided to bring it back for community and fellowship," Shellhamer said.
From 3 to 6 p.m., people enjoyed different strawberry desserts and other food. Proceeds benefited the church.
Face painting was free and children could play hopscotch and other games.
Verna Haupt, McKeansburg, enjoyed vanilla ice cream, strawberries and shortcake topped with whipped cream, which was called "the works."
"I love strawberries," she said.
In all, 100 quarts of strawberries were used, from Heim's Fruit Farm, McKeansburg, and B&R Farms, Ringtown. The ice cream was from Heisler's Dairy. The hot milk spongecake was homemade by people from the church, Shellhamer said.
John Heim, 54, of McKeansburg, owner of Heim's Fruit Farm, belongs to the church and remembers the festival.
"It was nice to get it started again," he said.
Shellhamer said it is something people can look forward to next year.
"We're looking to do it as an annual thing. I think it's such an awesome opportunity for fellowship and community," she said.
